Collier County Sheriff's Special Operations Building

Naples, Collier County, Florida

The two-story, 60,000 sq. ft. building is equipped with an 8,000-square-foot hangar and is located in the North Quadrant of the Naples Airport. The Sheriff’s department needed an airport-related facility to house combined operations including Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), armory, kennels, dive compression equipment and covered parking. The project took a 100 plus member team of more than 80 specialty trades approximately 14 months to complete.

The site design, provided by Hole Montes Inc. was complicated by the building’s location immediately adjacent to an active runaway. Strict controls were enforced, to ensure that the Airport’s operations were not affected by wind blown debris, construction material or unauthorized runway incursions by site workers.

The completed full-scale project included a computerized building management system, fully finished offices and the aircraft hangar facility complete with a 6,000-gallon jet fuel tank, hangar apron and taxiway access. The building, designed to withstand the strongest hurricane winds, was planned, designed and built to become a prototype for all law enforcement agencies throughout the United States.

Due to the location, desired building use, and several existing site factors, this project required many hours of coordination between different governmental agencies and has resulted in a successful project that the United States Secret Service has recognized as one of best facilities in the nation.
